Job description

The COO will be responsible for overseeing the firm's day-to-day operations, managing administrative functions, improving internal processes, and supporting strategic initiatives. This role requires a hands-on leader with strong business acumen, experience in law firm operations or professional services, and the ability to wear multiple hats in a fast-paced environment.

Client Details

Our client is a dynamic and growing boutique law firm in New York City, known for delivering exceptional legal services and building long-term relationships with our clients. As we scale, we are seeking a strategic and operationally focused Chief Operating Officer (COO) to help drive the next phase of our growth. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the Managing Partners to build structure, efficiency, and scalability into our operations.



Description

  • Firm Operations: Lead and manage all non-legal business functions including HR, finance, IT, marketing, and office administration.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with firm leadership to define strategic goals and develop operational plans to achieve them.
  • Process Improvement: Identify inefficiencies and implement systems, workflows, and tools to improve productivity, client service, and profitability.
  • Finance Oversight: Work with accountants/bookkeepers to manage budgets, cash flow, billing, collections, and vendor relationships. Provide regular financial reports to partners.
  • Talent Management: Oversee recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, and employee engagement to support a strong internal culture.
  • Technology and Systems: Evaluate and implement legal tech and firm management software (e.g., CRM, document management, time tracking, billing systems).
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with applicable laws, bar regulations, and internal policies.
  • Facilities and Vendor Management: Oversee office operations, space planning, and vendor/service provider relationships.

Profile

  • 10+ years of experience in operations leadership, preferably in a law firm, professional services firm, or startup environment
  • Proven experience managing firm-wide operations, with a strong understanding of financial and HR functions
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust and influence across a team of attorneys and staff
  • Experience with law firm management software and familiarity with legal billing and compliance practices
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA, JD, or equivalent experience is a plus
