Job description

Introduction:

The Zebra revolutionizes how connected consumers research and shop for insurance. We intentionally strive to build diverse teams that feel inclusive for all. Our motto is "All Stripes Welcome," we put that into practice by valuing traditional and non-conventional backgrounds and perspectives. Our Zeebs are passionate about learning, growing, & working together to tackle exciting problems.

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Lead Accountant to join our growing team in Austin, TX. This is a key senior-level role for someone with deep technical accounting knowledge, a collaborative mindset, and a drive to improve and optimize financial processes.  This role plays a critical part in maintaining the integrity of our financial systems, supporting month-end close processes, and guiding junior team members. The ideal candidate is proactive, organized, and thrives in a collaborative environment.

Location:

This is a hybrid role based in Austin, Texas. While we offer flexibility with remote work, candidates must reside in the Austin area and be able to commute to our office regularly for in-person collaboration with the finance team.

What You'll Do:
  • Oversee and lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, account reconciliations, and financial reporting

  • Drive the month-end and year-end close process with accuracy and timeliness

  • Partner cross-functionally with finance, operations, and business teams to ensure financial data integrity and alignment with company goals

  • Lead smaller accounting-related projects and process improvements, from planning to execution

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and audit requirements

  • Assist with budget and forecast processes as a thought partner to finance leadership

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior accounting team members

  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors as needed

What We're Looking For:

As we evaluate candidates across all roles, we look for folks with a strong sense of ownership, excellent communication and collaboration skills, and a dedication to continuous improvement.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong foundation in GAAP

  • Currently pursuing or planning to pursue an MBA (CPA is also a plus)

  • Experience with accounting systems like Sage or similar ERP platforms

  • Advanced Excel skills and strong attention to detail

  • Proactive, organized, and comfortable owning projects independently

Interview Process:
  • Recruiter Interview (30 minutes):
You’ll start with an introductory conversation with our recruiter to learn more about the role, our company culture, and what you’re looking for in your next opportunity. We'll also touch on your experience and answer any initial questions you may have.

  • Hiring Manager Interview (30-45 minutes):
Next, you'll meet with the hiring manager to dive deeper into your accounting background, leadership experience, and technical expertise. This is also a chance to discuss the team’s goals and expectations for the Lead Accountant position.

  • Final Panel Interview (1.5-2 hours split):
In the final stage, you’ll meet cross-functional team members in a panel-style format. This round assesses collaboration, problem-solving, and how you approach complex accounting scenarios. We value authentic conversations and aim to provide you with a clear sense of what it’s like to work here.

Benefits & Perks:

Inclusive and healthy environments are crafted intentionally. All of our employees can join and participate in (or create your own!) Employee Resource Groups. Here are some other wonderful perks of working here:
