The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, University of Miami invites applications for a Senior Research Associate II position working remotely with the Caribbean Fisheries Branch (CFB) in the Sustainable Fisheries Division at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) in Miami, FL (NOAA Fisheries).  The CFB conducts research and collects scientific data for stock assessment and management of living marine resources in the US Caribbean (Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands). This research involves close collaboration with CFB scientists and other researchers at CIMAS and SEFSC.  The selected individual will work offsite from the SEFSC Miami laboratory, and will be located in either Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.

The selected individual will be a member of the research team that is coordinating and developing fishery-independent sampling surveys in the US Caribbean.  The selected individual’s primary duties will include:

a) identifying and developing partnerships with Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands scientific consulting firms that have the necessary capabilities to conduct cooperative research (e.g., subcontracts with local fishers) with the SEFSC and other federal researchers;

b) coordinating and integrating to the extent possible currently ongoing fishery-independent survey work;

c) assisting with the development and implementation of new fishery-independent surveys for spiny lobsters, reef fishes, and queen conch;

d) assisting with preparation, management, and analysis of fishery-independent survey data; and,

e) assisting with organization and logistics of scientific workshops for improving stock assessments and resource management in the US Caribbean.

The position will require travel within and between islands in the US Caribbean.

Applicants must have a M.S. or higher degree in fisheries biology, marine science, mathematics, environmental science or related fields, and at least one year of post-degree work experience. Necessary experience includes participation in fisheries sampling programs (fishery-dependent and/or fishery-independent) and associated data management.  Applicants must have access to the internet, and possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.  Excellent oral and written communication skills will be helpful to communicate with a diverse group of people in collaborative projects.  The selected individual must be located in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.  Intermediate knowledge of Spanish is essential.
