Strategic Planning and Operations Senior Manager (Small Molecule Therapeutic Discovery & Research Technologies)

In this vital role you will partner with the VP of Small Molecule Therapeutic Discovery & Research Technologies (SMTD&RT) to drive and implement strategies, goals and initiatives. This role is expected to drive leadership team effectiveness and be a strategic thought-partner to functional leadership.

  • Provide Strategic and Operational Leadership

Deliver high-level strategic and operational support to the VP and senior leadership team, ensuring the effective execution of business strategies, initiatives, policies, and procedures that drive departmental success. Actively partner in the planning, development and tracking of goals and SMTD&RT prioritized agenda to align with broader organizational objectives. Support portfolio management and portfolio/resource analytics as needed. Coordinate senior leadership team to achieve strategic objectives. Turn unstructured business issues/requests into appropriate action plans and projects that result in high quality, significant and impactful deliverable. Drive effective decision-making within the leadership team and function.

  • Lead Cross-Functional Collaboration

Identify, lead and/or contribute to cross-functional teams in developing and refining innovative strategies and processes that leverage key opportunities (eg, SMTD&RT and Research initiatives and special projects). Facilitate the execution of these initiatives across all sites and sub-functions to ensure optimal performance and timely outcomes. Organize and coordinate key events and meetings supporting cross-functional and cross-departmental collaboration with clear objectives and action plans.

  • Support Project Oversight, Execution and Performance Tracking

Support the VP and senior leadership in directing and coordinating critical processes for SMTD&RT projects, overseeing their seamless execution across global sites and sub-functions. Track KPIs and metrics to monitor progress, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and timely delivery of objectives.

  • Shape Long-Term Strategic Planning

Develop a comprehensive understanding of departmental business needs and challenges, playing an integral role in both long-term strategic planning and the execution of change management initiatives. Ensure smooth transitions, drive organizational improvements, and enhance the department's impact. Manage external business relationships.

  • Resource and Financial Management

Oversee the SMTD&RT budget and headcount in collaboration with Finance, ensuring efficient resource planning and financial management for sub function operations. Manage budget to targets, partner with SMTD&RT leaders to align financial strategies with operational goals.

  • Manage Leadership Communications

Draft and manage communications on behalf of the VP and senior leadership team, ensuring clarity and consistency for key initiatives, meetings, and events across the department. Drive internal and external presentation development, including Operating/Business Reviews, All-Staff presentations, & reports on business performance. Represent business strategy and guide the activities of other functions such as Human Resources, Finance, and Corporate Communications in support of SMTD&RT objectives.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 2 years of project management experience

Or

Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 4 years of project management experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 6 years of project management experience

Or

Associate’s degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 10 years of project management experience

Or

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of project management experience in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD, Master's degree or MBA
  • Experience in strategic planning, operations, and budgeting in a Research and Development organization
  • Strong project management experience in life sciences/biopharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated experience supporting research (non-clinical) partnership activities
  • Deep understanding of the drug development process, preferably in small molecule discovery
  • Experience working in a global, matrix organization
  • Operational excellence: management skills, planning, organization, prioritization, decision making, objective setting, meeting management and plan execution
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate at all levels of the organization
  • Creative and critical problem solving, a strong strategic thinker

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
