Rain is the fastest-growing earned wage access (EWA) fintech in the U.S., serving 2.5 million employees and backed by top investors like QED and Prosus. We’ve raised nearly $400M in funding—including the largest Series A in fintech history—and just closed our Series B to fuel our next stage of hypergrowth.
At Rain, we’re building a better way to work—starting with pay. We help hourly workers access their earnings in real time, stay financially stable, and ultimately thrive. Our global team is scaling fast post-Series B, and we’re looking for a Senior Director of People who can scale with us.
This is not your typical HR role. We’re looking for a business-minded, high-empathy leader who sees People as a strategic lever—not a compliance checkbox or a gatekeeper function. Someone who believes that great People work is about making teams stronger, faster, more aligned.
You’ll own the full People function at Rain globally: recruiting, HR, development, culture, compensation, compliance, and more. You’ll lead a growing team both in the US and abroad, act as a key partner to our leadership, and be instrumental in shaping how Rain supports, grows, and retains top talent.
Key responsibilities
Be a Strategic People Leader
- Build and drive Rain’s People strategy to support our goals as we scale—making sure we’re set up to hire, develop, and retain incredible people at every stage of growth.
- Serve as a trusted partner and thought leader to execs and managers alike. Help them build stronger, healthier, more effective teams.
- Design and launch high-impact People programs—from performance reviews to compensation philosophy to org design—with clarity, focus, and follow-through.
- Proactively identify and solve for future People needs. You’re someone who sees around corners and takes action early.
- Use metrics to track organizational health and drive better decisions (e.g., performance, turnover, hiring efficiency, engagement). Report regularly to leadership.
Lead a High-Impact Team
- Lead and develop our People team—including recruiters, People Ops, and HR business partners. Set clear goals, coach often, and help each team member level up.
- Build a culture of high standards and accountability, both within the People team and across the company
- Champion a service-oriented mindset: Rain managers are our clients, and we aim to make their lives easier—not harder—every time we interact.
- Manage the People function’s budget and ensure we have the resources and the tools to be successful.
Maintain and Evolve Strong HR Foundation
- Ensure Rain remains compliant with all employment laws and internal policies—with common sense and clear communication, not fear or friction.
- Partner with Legal, Finance, and leadership to continuously refine and streamline processes as we scale.
- Equip managers to lead well. Provide the tools, guidance, and coaching they need to make good decisions and build strong teams.
- Act as an HRBP at the start of the role to better understand our business.
Manage and Support Equity, Payroll, and Total Rewards
- Manage and support the team responsible for global payroll, benefits, and equity—ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and a great employee experience.
- Maintain clean systems and processes for equity, including Employee Stock Option Pool management, employee grants, and reporting.
- Support leadership in evolving long-term compensation and equity strategies that align with company growth and employee value.
- Oversee employee education around compensation and equity so every team member understands the value of their total rewards.
- Ensure our systems and data (HRIS, payroll, benefits) are reliable and report-ready as we scale.
Recruit, Onboard, and Retain Top Talent
- Lead the recruiting function to attract great people quickly and thoughtfully.
- Make sure hiring managers are supported every step of the way—with clear roles, good training, and strong partnership.
- Deliver a world-class onboarding experience that makes new hires feel like part of the team from day one.
Shape Culture and Community
- Help Rain stay Rain as we grow. Champion our values, help teams stay connected, and foster a culture of high performance, recognition, and belonging.
- Monitor employee experience and engagement—and empower managers to lead the way in building healthy, inclusive, and high-trust teams.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience across People/HR leadership roles, ideally at high-growth startups or tech companies with employees around the world.
- Experience leading a People org with multiple disciplines—recruiting, People Ops, and HR business partners.
- Track record as a strong coach, manager, and culture builder. You bring out the best in your team and the teams around you.
- Default to thinking strategically, acting decisively, and communicating clearly—especially when it’s hard.
- Use data and sound judgment to guide decisions. You can tell when something’s a trend vs. a one-off, and you know what to do about it.
- Care deeply about people and culture—but never let “culture” become a substitute for performance or results.
- Are excited to work with a team that values speed, ownership, clarity, and kindness.
