What We're Looking For

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering for Payment, to be based in Poland, Spain or Cyprus.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering for Growth & Monetisation, You will be part of the Payments team and will be responsible for a) leading a team to support payment transactions for Welltech products, and b) (re)architecting our payments platform to scale for the future. This role will be tasked with retaining, building, and leading a high performing and highly engaged engineering team driving an end-to-end seamless Payment experience. We are currently processing 22M+ transactions on a yearly basis for 8M+ customers over 131 countries.

You will have responsibility to co-lead the product development team together with the Head of Product, form a technology strategy and architecture vision together with our Solutions Architect, as well as the day-to-day delivery of your teams, supporting and enhancing the Welltech engineering culture, growing the team and its capabilities and working with your peers to ensure business success.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and empower engineering teams: Guide and mentor multiple cross-functional engineering teams (including Frontend/Backend Engineers, Infrastructure, and QA) to achieve ambitious goals and deliver impactful solutions. Foster a collaborative and high-performing environment.

  • Define and drive technology strategy: Develop and articulate a clear technology vision and strategy aligned with product and business objectives. Ensure the adoption of modern, scalable, and reliable technologies across the engineering organization.

  • Architect for scale and resilience: Oversee the design and implementation of robust, scalable, and maintainable systems that can support millions of users. Provide architectural guidance and ensure adherence to best practices in a microservice environment.

  • Champion engineering excellence: Drive the adoption of engineering best practices, including clean code, test automation, continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), and DevOps principles. Promote a culture of quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Foster product and platform thinking: Cultivate a strong product mindset within the engineering teams, encouraging a "Platform as a Product" approach to build reusable and valuable capabilities. Partner closely with Product Management to define roadmaps and deliver customer value.

  • Manage technical partnerships and vendor relationships: Evaluate "buy vs. build" decisions and manage strategic partnerships with third-party technology providers to enhance our capabilities and accelerate delivery.

  • Build and grow world-class talent: Lead the recruitment, development, and retention of top-tier engineering talent. Create an environment that fosters growth, learning, and career progression for all team members.

  • Ensure operational excellence: Take ultimate responsibility for the performance, reliability, security, and scalability of our systems. Drive initiatives to improve system health, reduce operational overhead, and ensure business continuity.

Required skills:

  • Payment domain expertise: Proven experience in leading engineering initiatives related to payment processing, security, compliance (e.g., PCI DSS), and a strong understanding of the payment ecosystem and its complexities.

  • Proven leadership experience: Extensive experience (ideally 5+ years) leading and managing multiple software engineering teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Strategic technology vision: Demonstrated ability to define and articulate a clear technology strategy that aligns with business goals and drives innovation.

  • Deep understanding of scalable architectures: Experience in designing and building highly scalable and resilient systems, preferably in a microservice environment.

  • Cloud-native expertise: Strong understanding of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and experience managing deployments and infrastructure in cloud-native environments, including Kubernetes and serverless technologies.

  • Strong technical acumen: Solid technical background with a good understanding of modern software development practices, technologies, and trends. Ability to engage in technical discussions and evaluate technical decisions effectively.

  • Experience with CI/CD and DevOps: Deep understanding and practical experience in implementing and promoting CI/CD pipelines and DevOps principles across engineering teams.

  • Product-oriented mindset: Strong understanding of product development processes and a proven ability to partner effectively with Product Management and other stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills: Highly proficient in both written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Experience in building high-performing teams: Proven track record of successfully recruiting, mentoring, and retaining top engineering talent and fostering a positive and productive team culture.

  • Experience in agile and lean methodologies: Strong understanding and practical experience in applying agile and lean principles in software development and team management.
