Job description

 

Job Summary:

Authorization Specialist ensures the integrity and reliability of reported data and underlying systems within the scope of insurance and verifications requirements.  This position ensures that patient accounts are handled in compliance with Ohio’s Hospice policy and regulatory standards.  

What You Should Know About the Patient Account Authorization Specialist Role:

  • This is a full time position.
  • Schedule will be Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm.
  • This is REMOTE position but MUST live in the state of Ohio

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitors referrals and admission of patients, gathers information to complete verification of insurance with all payors.
  • Contact insurance carriers to verify patient’s insurance eligibility, benefits, and requirements. 
  • Clearly communicates and documents all deductibles, co-insurance and copays that the patient is responsible for.
  • Requests, tracks, and obtains prior authorizations prior to services being performed and as the patient changes levels of care. 
  • Follow up on insurance denials as needed to assist the billing/collections team.
  • Maintains a level of productivity suitable for the department.
  • Telephones, writes, or faxes to all insurance companies to obtain information regarding verification of benefits and obtain necessary denials as required by each insurance plan to ensure accurate billing to insurance plans and maintain cash flow.
  • Call patients and/or patient’s families and rendering physicians as needed to obtain additional information.
  • Cross trained in both Hospice and Physician Services.
  • Communicate any insurance trends or changes to leadership.
  • Clearly documents all communications and contacts with payors and personnel. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Annual education is completed by deadline to ensure staff has the information and tools to perform their job satisfactorily and meet regulatory compliance.
  • TB screening is maintained annually as required to meet regulatory compliance.
  • Follows all applicable federal and state regulations, including HIPAA, compliance, and employment regulations. Complies with all Ohio’s Hospice policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.M.) with experience in medical records, and accounting, Associates degree (A.A.) required.
  • Two years related experience and/or training of medical billing; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of basic math skills to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Excel and how to apply formulas.
  • Maintain knowledge of all federal and state regulations, timely filing restrictions of all insurance plans, including contract expirations, and physicians credentialing. 
  • Excellent communication skills.
